How many boxes of laminate flooring for 500 sq ft?

Between 20 and 33 cartons, for the same 500 sq ft

Every figure below was read off the manufacturer's own product page in July 2026, not off a retailer or a rule of thumb. Seven laminate collections from three makers, with the cartons you would buy for 500 sq ft plus a 10% allowance:

Thirteen cartons between the extremes, for an identical floor. That is the answer to why nobody can tell you the number without seeing your carton — and why the box count, not the square footage, is what you should be pricing and arranging delivery around.

The carton is packed by the piece, not by the area

The obvious guess is that wide planks come in big cartons. It is backwards. Mohawk's Adler Creek is the narrowest plank on the list at 6.13 in and has one of the largest cartons at 24.18 sq ft, because it packs twelve planks; Woodstock Knoll is 7.5 in wide and packs seven, for 17.18. Same 47.25 in length, same maker. Divide any carton figure by one plank's area and you get a clean whole number — 7, 9, 12 — which is what the packer is actually holding constant. So plank width tells you nothing about coverage, and neither does thickness: Mannington's 12 mm carton and Mohawk's 8 mm carton are within a third of a square foot of each other.

500 sq ft is not the size where fractions hurt — small rooms are

This is worth stating plainly because the opposite is often assumed. Run every carton size above across floors from 100 to 1,000 sq ft and measure how much overshoot the rounding adds beyond the 10% allowance: at 500 sq ft it averages about 1.4%, near the bottom of the range. At 100–180 sq ft it averages 7–8% and peaks over 17%. The reason is arithmetic rather than anything about flooring — one partial carton is a fixed lump, and dividing it by a bigger floor makes it smaller.

So at this size stop worrying about the fraction. Whichever product you pick you will end up owning 552 to 567 sq ft, and the spare lands in the same 52–67 sq ft band regardless. The thing that genuinely changes is how many boxes arrive.

The rules you have been told are the maker's, not the trade's

An order of 20–33 cartons is where per-carton variation starts to show, and the instructions for handling it are brand-specific. Shaw's laminate installation guidance says to "inspect the flooring material for any visible defects prior to installing" and to "always work from multiple cartons to achieve a uniform appearance" — open several and mix as you lay, rather than emptying one before starting the next.

The same page is a useful warning about treating any of these numbers as universal. Shaw specifies a 1/2 in expansion space around the perimeter, and states that "no acclimation is required for Shaw laminate flooring when installation site conditions are met" — both different from what other makers require of their own product. Read the document that came with the floor you actually bought.
